Dolly Rebecca Parton
Dolly Rebecca Parton was conceived in
Pittman Center on January 19, 1946. She was born in Sevierville to Avie Lee
Parton (a housewife) and Robert Lee Parton (a tobacco farmer). She appeared
featured on Knoxville TV at 12 years old. When she was 13, she had a recording
contract with an unnamed label and was singing on the Grand Ole Opry. She
relocated to Nashville in 1964 to begin her country music career after
graduating from high school. Carl Dean, a asphalt-paving business owner, was
her first lover. They got married on May 30 in 1966. Porter Wagoner hired her
in 1967 to appear on his show, The Porter Wagoner Show (1961). She was on the
show for seven years. Her duets became famous, and she was a part of the group
that Porter Wagoner had at the Grand Ole Opry. She also sold records and
performed on tour. Her smash hit "Joshua" that reached the top spot
in 1970, was her biggest hit single. She made the decision to go on her own
although she recorded duets with the singer. In 1974, she quit the duo to become
a solo artist. Dolly was a hugely loved musician and singer. Dolly was honored
with many Country Music Association awards (1968-1971 1971, 1975-1976,
1975-1976). The diminutive (5'0") beauty was a perfect fit for television.
In the late 1970s, Dolly was frequently appearing on talk shows, and even
before having her own Dolly (1976). Dolly was awarded her first Grammy award in
1977 for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Dolly made her film debut in
the film 9 to 5 in the year 1980. The film received nominations for an Oscar
for the song that was the title and also for Grammy Awards 2/3: Best Country
Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Her most memorable performances
were in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) and Rhinestone (1984) in
which she sang "Tennessee Homesick Blues". Dolly Parton Enterprises
is her media empire that is worth $100 million. In 1986, she founded Dollywood
which is a Tennessee theme park located in Pigeon Forge. This was to celebrate
her Smoky Mountain childhood. In the television series Dolly She was the main
character herself. She was awarded a second Grammy in 1988, this time for the
Best Country Performance Duo/Group with Vocals in the category of
"Trio".
